Held their heads up high
Pulled every load
Down every road
Whether wet or dry.
Duty
Honor
Country
That’s all they need to know
Then step aside
They’ll lead the way
Through wind
Rain or
Snow.
A ‘can do’ spirit
Is their guide
The difficult
They do today.
The impossible
Takes a bit
Longer—
They do have
An occasional
Bad day.
They answered
The call
Each one and all
And most would
Do it again
And I’m proud
To say

I am one of them.
Your respect and honor for the veterans and your appreciation of having served is commendable. I thank you for your service, which sounds dry and common, but I mean sincerely. I was married to a marine for a good while and I have an inkling of what it means to serve. God bless you. I very much enjoyed this poem.

and together with you, Edward...with your verse....celebrate and
honour every soldier...present and past...for their service in the military...
In silence...we express gratitude and love for all immeasurable sacrifices
made by you all...brave men...We take a moment to...place a fresh scarlet
red poppy flower next to the name denoted on the wall...a potent symbol
of a lasting remembrance for generations to come...to reap the benefits
of freedom....even if it's definition changes all the time....Thank you.
Your verse...will live on...forever...
I'll salute you then, for your service. Still, I hate to see any more die or come home unable to live in civilian society after the horror they've been through.
Steadfast, talented, devoted, I have nothing but respect for our troops. I, too, am a veteran. 249th Engineer Battalion; we constructed tank-pads, and roads and helped with cleanup and body removal during Hurricane Camille in 1969. Enjoyed your thoughts.
I remember when this date was Armistice Day and commemorated the end of the War to End All Wars (WWI/the Great War)... it lauded peace. My mother's mother remembered when Mother's Day commemorated peace as well, after The War of the Rebellion (the un-Civil War). I despise the profiteering industries and their never-ending wars. Nonetheless, Edward, a fine poem and I stand with conflicting emotions in the ranks with you. Best, Jan
