 Walking Soldier

Walking soldier off to war,
in the footsteps of many, gone before.
Will he win like those of yore?
Will he even, the awful score?

Walking soldier all down the line.
Walking soldier doing doubletime.
Walking soldier what will you find?
Walking soldier, is this your time?

Walking tall and strong,
with resolve and spirit.
The wrath of God on his side,
and the enemy to fear it.

A long line of youth,
entering the grinder,
of blood letting gore,
that makes one no kinder.

Walking soldier all down the line.
Walking soldier doing doubletime.
Walking soldier what will you find?
Walking soldier, is this your time?

False bravado and immature brash,
demonizing an enemy like a bad rash,
anger and fear mix for the mash,
a roll of dice determines the clash.

The sound and the fury becomes so intense,
when the fog of war begins to commence.
Earsplitting concussion consumes the sense,
innocence of childhood becomes past tense.

Walking soldier all down the line.
Walking soldier doing doubletime.
Walking soldier what will you find?
Walking soldier, is this your time?

Wounded soldier walks home to jeers or glory,
whether he wins or loses, it's the same old story.
Decorated for valor or spurned for desertion,
the soldier's been hurt and walks with the gory.

Walking through life on the path of honor,
the soldier walks with long thoughts of dread.
Nightmares and fears dance through his head,
for though he tries to live, he's the walking dead.

Walking soldier all down the line.
Walking soldier doing doubletime.
Walking soldier what will you find?
Walking soldier, is this your time?

The edge of history is ever present in your foot path of the past moving ever forward into the ever present repeat of history. Will we ever learn?

We as a nation need to do far more for our valiant veterans than we do; we all owe them a debt that we can never re-pay.

This seems to have been written with heartfelt inspiration for those who have served. Men and women answer their call to duty, and those who return, do so as changed individuals. No one returns unscathed. As I walk toward the entrance of my local VA, I pass by the VA motto, "To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan." And as I do so, a chill crosses my entire being. Then I go inside, and I see firsthand those who have borne the battle, and I feel another chill, even stronger than before. It causes me to weep silently within, for I know...I know. Thank you, Ron, for this lovely write.

I wonder if my father felt that way? He spent the rest of his life helping returning soldiers and especially those that were shell-shocked.

Right you are about our returning soldiers turned out to pasture as the walking dead. A sad truth.

RON ... nice tribute to all our "Dog-Faces."

I had an uncle who was a WWI vet. He died before I was born.
Lee Hyland I'm told was basically shell-shocked, and sat quietly in a dark corner, rarely talking. I still have several of the Medals he was awarded.

Another "Lost Soul" ... or Walking Dead.

I've always liked Heinlein's take on citizenship. Only folks allowed to vote or hold office would be veteran's of foreign wars. I doubt the veterans would fall for that scam about buried chemical weapons.

This reminds me of my relatives killed in WW1 and then two uncles were captures by the Japanese. They survived but one died last year at 93 while the other never married except his marriage to lady Nicotine. But this is a good poem to my memory of them.

Yep. My uncle Max was certainly one of the living dead, Ron. I liked this poem quite a lot.
