Poem Artwork

Rosetta Mission

After a 10-year journey
And 4 billion miles
A space craft has landed
On the most uncertain surface
Of a comet.
It is a spectacular achievement
With high costs and
Small rewards.
But measured against
Earthly costs and benefits
It pales.
This could be the beginning
Of a new venture—
How to save ourselves
From ourselves.
I don’t know if
We have yet proved
Our mettle
Our worthiness.
In the game
Of hurling objects
Randomly or with purpose
The universe is
The grandmaster
And we are mere
Children.
Projectiles and uncertain surfaces
Caution us
To move boldly
With humility.

I'm not convinced we have proved ourselves worthy of a new beginning. We have to free ourselves of the greed that is sanctioned by those in power first... Might never happen.

Yes, besides scientific understanding, the promise of comets and asteroids is that they are a great source of material for building our future without having to spend great sums of earthly energy to overcome earthly gravity.

It is also encouraging that the European consortium undertook the task and it wasn't a game of superpower one-upmanship.

I would love to be out there in space for that 4 million miles, so far away from our humanity, maybe I could meet an alien on another planet, though I would be the alien on his planet then, wouldn't I...?

Darwin's Blind Spot by Frank Ryan

The symbiotic pattern of evolution is everywhere and allows us a very different and fascinating window into the way symbiotic viruses work, since all viruses are symbiotic, including those involved in our human reproduction.
