Have you ever dreamt of bean soup?
I have.
How unimaginative, how uncreative could
I have possibly been about a bean?
Beans are not the sole source of that
Sudden and irresistible urge known far
And wide as the fart.
Still they foment gases in ungodly masses
The expulsion of which is insanely
And embarrassingly pleasant…
They are also a source of protein known
Far and wide by the poor.
They are cheap except for those with
No money.
They have a wonderful taste except for
Those who aspire to asparagus and
Caviar and things that actually taste awful.
I dream of beans when I’m hungry
And lonely
I mean when I am really hungry and
Desperately lonely
And they are therefore a friend to those
At the low end of the socioeconomic scale
A goal of sorts that even the poorest can
Ultimately achieve and find comfort in
A large vat of them that is warm and inviting
Is too irresistible for me
I am in among their numbers floating in a slow
And glowing happiness that I did not know
While awake
Why such an obsession with the bean?
Whence comes this connection to simplicity
At the gut level so to speak?
Perhaps it is a reminder that
Survival is an instinct that is best understood
When life is challenged and
We have fallen back into the biological abyss
Where imagination is the last refuge
Of the downtrodden
When we have been stripped of our
Dignity by an uncaring world
And hunger has us in a death grip
That forces us to awaken with
Determination to fight again.
I AGREE. IT IS THOSE 'THINGS' THAT BROUGHT US THROUGH WHICH WE REMEMBER...DEARLY...AND NEVER WANT TO FORGET. FOR, THEY SO FOSTER THE DETERMINATION AND THE FIGHT TO 'DREAM' AND COMFORT US ALONG THE WAY. YOURS IS BEANS...MINE IS GOD. THUS, OF THE 'BRIGHTER DAYS...I DREAM'. THANKS FOR SHARING, EDWARD, I ENJOY 'YOU'. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Thanks for reminding me about my love for beans, whether they be string, pinto, baked, red, lima, or soy, eating them in all varieties, gives me joy.
From my personal experience, the idea that beans produce gas is highly overrated, and probably just a downright lie. When I count the things that give me gas, beans are not on the list.
Being poor is not being deprived when one can eat some of the finest food on the planet seven days in a row without being hungry. But don't forget the pea, and goober peas, the lowly peanut. All sources of good protein, fiber, and carbohydrate, without the need for meat and potatoes. Yum Yum.
A great write about one of my favorite foods. I am a firm believer that beans are one of the most complete foods there is and in my culture, beans are enjoyed :de la hoya (from the pot) and refried with cheese and bacon.
I love beans too...especially as I am a non meat eater...I remember a famous American author saying she was visiting her ill Mother to have her special 'Refried Beans' probably for the very last time...I always meant to look up what this recipe was...
Here in UK Baked Beans on toast is one of the most popular meals/snacks...and a tin of them added to a home made soup transforms it to 'Bean Heaven' for me...
What an interesting and homely poem...

I love all soups. But when in Germany during the war, a town we captured was very friendly to us GI's. A German woman I met made some bean soup for me and I thought I died and went to bean heaven. It was delicious.
Beans are a good source of protein vitamin. Next time slice up a hot dog to mix it in with the beans, it may actually tastes better. Much heartfelt write, Edward!
So true what you say! And in India we have a substitute lentil soup called moong dal soup. And we can swear by this humble protein. The fact is stranger than fiction. But today we have the American President as chief guest for our republic day celebrations which will begin in a few hours time !!!
