To My Conservative Friends
Don’t tell me about your principles
I know them
They are my heritage also
They are in my DNA;
Instead tell me about reality—our shared reality
And why it diverges so far from our principles;
Let me know that you understand that vast chasm
Between what is and what can be
How it clashes with our heritage
How it affronts and impedes our principles
How it harms and causes pain and suffering
How it suppresses truth and justice;
I cannot live a lie
I will not live a lie;
Where is the honor in forever taking?
Where is the truth in excessive inequality?
Where is the justice in excessive pleasure for the few
When it brings excessive suffering for the many?
How can I stand in honor of my children
How can I face my forebears
Amidst the pain while
Fueling more of it?
My destiny does not lie on that pathway
My soul will not allow it;
Heaven knows my every move
My every thought;
I must first be true to myself
Only then can I expect to be true
To others
And to our God.
