What is poetry?

Poetry is about us and our place in the universe
It is our connection to all that is past, all that is now
And all that ever will be;
But it comes alive when it tells us more about
Who we are, why we live, and about our connection to
What we can be in our most glorious moments
Of existence.

Words and music sustain us but
Poetry lets us define ourselves
While it finds new venues in which to thrive;
It is the magic of flight
The persistence of thoughts
And the transcendence of
Ourselves beyond all cosmic limitations.

In our expanding universe where
Time and space merge and
Unknown forces can crush our dreams
Poetry allows us to overcome
Even that which we do not understand;
Before we reach destinations or
Even before we begin them.

Poetry describes our journey
It is the Imagination within our souls
A glimpse and a portrait of love;
It gives shape and purpose to
The tiniest quantum forces or to
Our wildest astro projections.

Ultimately poetry connects us
To the source of all that is
And to all that can be—
It is our most profound response to
The gift that is life.
