Poem Artwork

[Image of a father and daughter who dared to swim the Rio Grande river for a taste of freedom]

What Price Freedom?

To all who would seek to know
About the price of freedom
You are speaking to the wrong person
I am a veteran of war
But I am alive
I have a daughter
Who lives and loves life
We cherish our friends and neighbors
But we can all sing laugh dance and
Find our own way.

We have the privilege of paying taxes
For the common good
Of attending schools and churches
If we choose
To teach to learn and to
Draw from the wisdom of each other
If we may.

But we are not the true heroes in this life
That honor is reserved for the few
Who dare to risk something
Above and beyond the call—
They do what others only talk about
They confront beyond their safety
They walk where angels fear to tread
They pay without a care
For the cost.

Whether separated by a wall
Or by a river
By a jail sentence
Or by the gates of hell...

They alone know about the true price of freedom--
It’s in the sacrifice.

Sad times these are. We all need to do what we can to correct much that has gone wrong over the past few years.

A poem with a powerful message. It is so easy to think of young warriors as those who have secured the freedom that we have today. But, although freedom is often maintained by crushing the evil that creeps into us that restricts our freedom by power and oppression, I would include all those who spend their lives protesting inequities thought to be part of normal living but actually restricting others' freedom. Those people who protest against all odds know the true price of their sacrifice as well.

Thank you for your service. Not as a soldier, but as a steadfast presenter of the statistical truth of wealth inequality in our society.

You captured what it is to be alone. So do I, my friend. I've walked many roads during my lifetime, and being alone, even surrounded by many people, is not something you can actually relate to, unless you have walked that walk.

Powerful, and an honest assessment of the truth to few of us acknowledge. Thank you.
