The End Game

In my new rendezvous with life
I make this assessment every day –
How much longer do I have?
There was a time when
My life and immortality were
Constant companions.

Perceptions are now my new reality.
All things are ephemeral
As wistful as the morning dew
They circumscribe and
Control my day.

I don’t live in fear rather
With the certainty that
Long endeavors and me are
As logical a sequence as 1,2, and 23.
Funny…
But poetry is now as playful
As Jack and Jill and that hill.

And so I will try to improve my skills.

More to the point
Today is about relaxation
And exploring things of the mind
Finding a bit of joy in following clues
Like the innovative moves of my two cats
Who have just shown me new ways
Of saying “I am hungry.”
They are more of a joy than ever.

I wonder if my daring move of
Yesterday will have the desired impact
On a special person.
And so today I will get the first glimpse
Of my skills at cunning and clandestine
Tactics and how they impact
On one whose mind and emotions
Are as mysterious to me as
What tomorrow may bring.
I am always surprised at my
Clumsy efforts to gage the
Will of others
But careful not to be too
Disappointed in what they do
They have their own agendas
That rarely coincide with mine.

Let it be.
My compass and my star
Are mine alone to follow
Be gracious
Offer a hand of help
Smile and move on.
Tomorrow will arrive
Soon enough.

Yes, yes, yes. Quality of life is what counts and the difference a good man can make in small things that ripple on forever.

The man you are within shines on those around. Now or never in this wondrous world.

Quite an introspection on the coming end. And a lot of advice on how to deal with it. I have enjoyed your take in your poetic way of expressing it.

Keeping some element of playfulness in the process (as you mentioned) certainly has its benefits. Wellness is one of them. "Jack and Jill and that hill" was an effective example to make your point. Thanks for sharing. r

Tomorrow will come with or without us, and life goes on. If we can pass on just a little of what we've learned, and have our advice taken seriously, I'd call that a good day. There is much reflection in your write, and much to reflect on. Excellent write.

The casual musings of a wise man who has learned some thing in life and is willing to pass them on in this casual, straightforward manner to those who read and listen. Thank you for posting, Edward. Your poems are too few and far between.
