Time was ...
Time was when we could fritter away
the joys of the moment and laugh at the stars
as if they were ours --
When events were considered as 'coming soon';
Time enough to decide or not
Whether they might fill our moments
with enough excitement to pause and reflect
on who we are, and why
or what tomorrow might bring.
Time to share our passions
with those more driven by the future
than by now.
Time when we were young and invincible.
We read about time from a book, while
time reads us like a book—unimaginatively
boring.
Our goals are something to be decided when
events pile up and become lost in the clutter
When relentless takes away our choices
And the ''fierce urgency of now" is smothering.
And then there is that indomitable plateau
Where time stops its incessant trek
And allows us one brief moment for summation
Before it pushes us into the chasm of no return.
Did we praise enough when it was needed?
Did we sing loud enough for others to hear?
Did our actions inspire?
Did our words light a fire?
Or did we simply run out of time?
The unforgiving moment wants to know...
As I age and old friends die off, while new friends and relatives seldom peek into my life, I am beset with, "the fierce urgency of now." Then wonder if that "plateau" you write of will ever come.
Gave me a lot of thought to think of.
