She sits sipping tea.
Lavender fills the air.
She examines her face
So light and so fair.
Her skin was once flawless.
It now shows some wear.
She wonders if he’ll notice.
She wonders if he’ll care.
She waits with such patience
Each night and each day.
She’s hoping and praying
She’ll know what to say.
When he finally appears
He’ll bring back those years
When she shed all those tears
And faced all those fears.
She senses more than sees him.
Her breath catches in a sigh.
He puts his arms around her.
They both begin to cry.
His smiling eyes are like the evening sky.
His hair’s still blond and curly.
She remembers how he looked at night
And when he wakened early.
He asks her if she’s happy.
How can she tell him no?
They hold each other tightly
Not wanting to let go.
She holds his face within her hands.
He runs his fingers through her hair.
The tests of time and quirks of fate
Were cruelly unfair.
She spends her days and nights
In the middleness of time.
The waiting is so painful.
The dreaming is sublime.
Now he stands before her.
He’s come to her at last.
It’s not possible to talk of future
So they cling to memories of the past.
She lives a life of waiting.
She never would complain.
The waiting seems to suit her
As her years begin to wane.
She remembers how he looked back then,
So handsome and so brave.
He hasn’t aged a moment
Since she placed him in his grave.
