I saw them standing in the streets
looking skyward as the storm poured down.
The air was full of dust and fire
their eyes filled with tears
as helplessness reached its peak
I too was forced to face these fears.
So wake you from your peaceful slumber
fill the shadows with beacons of light,
to carry in the wind,
breathe this air once again.
There you were in Pearl Harbor
there you stood at Valley Forge
in the war of 1812 the flames were high,
but you held the door.
You remembered me in ’63
when weeping filled the air
and held me tight and rocked me slowly
until the darkness turned to light.
Blanket me like a willow tree
and clear the dust inside of me.
As all around the fallen lie
for on this day the price is high.
So come to me as I take one knee
and fill this heart with resolve.
That in the saline of this sorrow
and in the twilight of tomorrow
lies the price of being free.
