Two months went by and not a word,
And no vindictive acts,
Perhaps the police had scared him off,
She thought and that was that.

She went about her business,
Almost forgetting what he’d done,
Totally oblivious
Of the troubles yet to come,

Then at the supermarket,
He suddenly appeared,
The chill came back to haunt her,
As gradually he neared.

“Did you think I had forgotten you”?
He mouthed without a sound.
Fear and panic gripped her,
And she quickly spun around.

Running for the exit,
She just had to leave the shop,
But she had not paid for her groceries,
And by security was stopped.

They accused her of shoplifting,
And though she tried to explain,
The police were called, and would you believe,
It was the same policeman again.

Who listened to her story,
Then searched half-heartedly,
For the man she said had been there,
And then at last they set her free.

She went round to her boyfriend's
Afraid to be alone,
And asked if she could stay with him,
Not wanting to go home.

He knew about her story,
And vowed to find the guy,
And show him what fear was all about
When he met him eye to eye.

But by coincidence that evening,
A truck hauling a heavy load,
Cut him up on the highway,
And forced him off the road,

Nobody got its number,
Or saw who was at the wheel,
But the boyfriend's cars was totalled,
And the boyfriend sadly killed.

Just another tragic hit and run,
On another interstate,
More proof if we needed it,
About the cruellest turns of fate,

But next day upon her doorstep,
Almost beyond belief,
Was an unwritten card edged round in black,
And a jet black funeral wreath.
