I’ve been a bit part player
In this movie they call life,
I thought I was the star
But maybe only to my wife,
To the rest I made the numbers up,
In a cast of endless souls,
Always just outside of touching reach
Of my ambitions and my goals.
Yet, believing I was doing
The best for everyone,
Now I’m wondering if I was right
In anything I’ve done?
Inadvertently, without intent,
I know some things I did,
Hurt those closest to my heart,
Not least of all, my kids.
But in honesty, hand on my heart,
It was never my intent,
And everything I did, I swear
I believed I did for them,
I used to be so certain,
I used to be so sure,
Now I just don’t know
About anything, anymore.
Am I worth a moment?
Or even a single breath,
Can I do anything worthwhile
With whatever time I’ve left?
Perhaps it doesn’t matter
I’m just a man in many billion
No more than a gain of sand
In a desert like dominion.
No more or less important,
Than any stranger on the street.
But there’s a feeling deep within my soul
Of ultimate defeat,
