Shouldn't I Know?

Your smile.
Condescending? Admiring?
Shouldn’t I know?
Everyday for ten years, I’ve woke up beside you.
Held you, in sync, as shadows swallowed our form.
Taking your essence and flesh within my own,
I’ve ingested the trials you brought;
Impregnated by the ones we made together.

Yet, there you stand, tall and strong,
An expression of unfamiliar territory
Etched upon your handsome face.
My heartbeat accelerates, hands clam up,
Adrenalin rushes, and I suddenly feel sick.

Shouldn’t I know?

Then, your smile softens into one I recognize,
Eyes glimmering with a loving laugh
And body relaxing in kind.
You take me in your arms, hugging me tightly,
Reassuring me.
I lift my head, smiling, thankful.

Will I never know?

My smile fades
Then, so does yours.

We never truly know what or how long some of our emotions and intensity of our feelings will last Marie so that is why we must enjoy them while we have them.
