The lonely stranger at the concession stand

I was covering a softball game in Carmi, IL last year when I went to the concession stand to get something to drink. I was waited on by a young softball player who just broken up with her boyfriend. I was also going through one of those times when I was haunted by my lost loves. Funny how that always seems to happen. This must be how people can relate to my work (forgive the bragging).

She just broke up,

She tried to be courageous,

but her heart was shattered,

for the first time perhaps.

One day on top of the world,

the next day hitting the iceberg.

Even tough little ballplayers

can have their dreams dashed.

But hang in there,

have a good cry

and try again.

It'll get better.

And you'll have him still around,

So will he.

You'll visit him and haunt him

the missed opportunity

late at night.

How do I know?

I don't know.

I'm a little older

I guess.

I'll have a Gatorade,

but those three cute girls

in the retro clothes

standing behind me?

Nothing for them.

They're phantoms

and they're with me.
