TODAY’S POETRY
Poetry is suppose to be rough
When reading it show that you are tough
Cousin are you sure yes just look around now is yours pure
Where do I fit in
My cousin said your stuff is thin
You are suppose to do it like that
Have an attitude and stop being so laid back
I am relaxed
Treat you right & sort of laid back I prefer it like that
I am black overweight & no problem with hypertension
This is one benefit of being laid back did I mention
There was a time when poetry was about love
People spoke of flowers & the stars above
Even though that was not all they spoke of
That intellect over there is a Poet
You would have to read some of his prose to know it
That rapper on the radio is a Poet
Listen to his lyrics and you’d know it
My Uncle is a Poet
If you could hear him speaking that jive from throw back 1975
You’d swear he was the Brother from open mic last night ‘cause he is always coming at you live
Poetry is what life’s experiences has brought to you and me
Poetry is life put into words so that one with or w/out empathy could see
Poetry is what you want it to be
Poetry comes in many different forms from A-V
To me poetry is simply ME
Being FREE

Not long ago, some "poet" read me the riot act for writing in free
verse. "NOT A POEM!!" he screeched [if it is possible to screecb in an online message;)}. I made the mistake of arguing. His opinion did not change by one hair. To him, either a poem rhymes -- we're talking standard end-rhyme with no variation -- or it is "prose."
Period, end of discussion.

That kind of rigid thinking is the antithesis of creativity, isn't it, Stephanie. And poetry is the epitome of creativity!! Might
even say the crowning glory.
Thank you for this passionate, educational, and beautifully presented
piece on the rich and protean and instinctual and emotionally evocative art we call poetry.
There may be almost as many definitions as there are poets, but if you have the heart and soul of a poet -- like Stephanie Webb, for
instance -- that doesn't worry you a whit. What is important, as you
say, is self-expression and a capacity for empathy, and for tapping it in others.
