"Go Shireen", goes the cry
From our side of the arena.
Many other names are heard
From the far side,
But they do not register.
As the girls skate swiftly
On the cool ice,
The only thing that registers
Is Shireen’s concentration.
Perhaps, determination is a better word.
Actually, I am not sure if it is not both.
What is it that makes young Shireen go?
I wonder!
Looking at her small, frail frame
One would hardly associate
The “physical” game of ice hockey with her.
So, it is not physical prowess.
Her parents cheer her on from the sidelines
With their fingers crossed –
They know the game can be dangerous.
So, it is not parental ambition.
And then it dawns on me!
She must be playing for the joy of playing.
I did not notice if she was wearing Nikes,
But she certainly has the Nike spirit –
“Just Do It!”
