If you are yourself
you are a rebel!
Rebels are to be crushed and denied!
Young rebels are to be molded!
It starts early as a child.
You cannot experience your true self!
You cannot go outside and hear the birds!
“not now” my dear.
You cannot laugh and play!
It is not the time for it.
You cannot play in the mud!
You get too dirty.
You cannot wear clothing you like to wear.
You embarrass us.
You cannot eat your lunch when hungry.
It is not time for it.
You are not allowed to lay in bed.
It is not bed time.
You are not allowed laugh out loud.
You may disturb others.
You are not allowed to be curious.
You may break things.
You are not to tell the truth!
You may offend others.
You are not to study what you love.
You will not make enough money.
You are not allowed to pay attention to singing birds.
It is time to study.
You are not allowed to be you!
You need to be “proper”
The reserved you,
The predictable you
The manageable you.

Fortunately, my parents gave me a lot of room to make my own decisions (and mistakes). I learned early on to be responsible at about 10 years of age, wondering, as I reached my teenage years, why some kids were so ridiculously rebellious to the point of injury and other kids were so docile that they would follow any Pied Piper that came along with a tune, however bizarre.
You struck a chord with this one, my man!

Not in my family. When I was a child, we had servants in our family, and my mom and dad were always going somewhere. Servants were the ones that were close to us, (I had a special one that was hired just to look after me) they would never say these things to us.
And I, as a mother, would never say some of these things to my children either. Don't know this kind of parenting, but never underestimate the power of our children, because some children would learn on their own even with the least of supervision. It all depends on the child himself/herself what kind of a person he/she is, and how responsible a person he/she is.
But yes... I did get a little rebellious when I was a teenager. Ran away from home for almost a week until I was found; but I had good reasons for running away. I came from a family generation that favored male child, but toward the end of my parents lives, they had chosen to be with me and another brother of mine, and I couldn't be happier. That's just the way I am.
