There is a place only I can go,
Where nightmares lurk and tears dwell.
I wish you could come and hold my hand
But it's a very, very private hell.
Sometimes I will spend hours there
Searching for little pebbles of joy.
But they are few and far between,
Perhaps just a smile or a favourite toy.
But it's not a place I can stay too long,
The pain's too great, the heart too sad.
So I lock the door 'tween here and there
Lest I stay too long and go quietly mad.
I wish I had another place to go,
To bask in young memories, tender and mild.
But this is the place that's been left to me
And you are ever only once a child.
So this is the legacy I give to my Lord,
This is all I have to sacrifice.
I’ll give Him the key to a lived-in hell
And He’ll give me a new key to the rest of my life.
