A poem inspired while watching the Olympics

________________________________________

There are times that come only once

Once in a lifetime

Running the race

Swimming the distance

Twirling in the air

Sometimes you catch the bar

But other times you fall flat

The world expects much from you

And you expect it from yourself

When is it time to say goodbye

And leave your shoes on the mat?

This has been your life

It is now time to go.

But there are dreams that come

Filling the days and the nights

Are you wearing gold in them?

Are you the one who won?

You don’t have to be the best in the world

To be the best you can be.

Glory is fleeting, and gold does tarnish

With a rust that time doesn’t permit to be moved.

Life goes on, and dreams of gold fade,

The experience of what was

Of who you are and were remain

The victory is in the showing up.

Some are born great and others achieve greatness

A famous poet once said

The greatness is in the being there

There is greatness in being here

We all have our races to run

Some will sprint, others will walk

The marathon of life continues

And we pass the torch to others in due course.

The dreams of gold remain for others

After dreams of life have faded

Now we celebrate, and look forward

To life between the dreams.

Victory is also "trying" and achievement is staying the course.

...We all have our races to run
Some will sprint, others will walk
The marathon of life continues
And we pass the torch to others in due course...

Enjoyed.
