Books certainly have celebrated the train. From train history I learned that early UK trains had to be exactly flat. It was only the upstart Americans who figured out a way to make trains climb grades with amazing power. When I went over the Appalachians in Amtrak, they added a few more locomotives to give us a boost, but we still slowed down to nearly walking speed before we made it over the top of the pass and into a tunnel.
For a course I taught at Atlanta University on public policy in private enterprise 1978-80, one of the textbooks was a pessimistic outlook for World economy by Robert L. Heilbroner.
He described all of the world's population in a train headlong for a cliff with the poorest in the front who would go off the cliff first followed by the wealthy all the way to the richest in the caboose. Some would agree with him today. The single train was a good analogy, or we're all in the same boat. Some just don't seem to see it as they strive to get richer and richer.
