Caves are rather inhospitable places for their dampness, darkness and overall lack of comfort, especially when bats are present.
Caves were probably used primarily for rituals and for escape from predators and other humans when attacked.
The caves you referred to of people burrowing into mountain sides, also provided safe living places where the weather could be ameliorated from harsh heat or cold. Basically not caves at all but, in ground or rock dwellings.
