With the stroke of a pen
The story has been lost
Or given to silicon
But oh what a cost
First papyrus
Then parchment
From the quill to the pen
If our enemies come knocking
We’ll go back again
And what will become
Of the stories and the poems
Does anyone read anymore
Do we really care about history
Beyond a middle-school misery
What will today’s time capsule contain
No books I suppose
Perhaps a sampling of clothes
Sagging jeans, ball cap, and a thong
Gangsta` Rap might explain what happened
If they find our world lying in ruins
No respect for the least among us
“Hey, Mutha, whaddya you think you doin`”
Whatever happened to reading
Except Grandma reading Grisham by the pool
When you answer
You’ll also learn what happened to writing
And what became of a generation of fools
well said, glad i teach early childhood, where little people are just little people
