I caught your smile as you turned,
My love of millennial days,
As you taught our grandchild
Some new skill,
Passing along the family jewels,
A point most-likely lost for now,
A recipe for a cherry pie,
Or more likely
What it is to be kind.
I am reminded
When I see you smile,
What is important in this life,
Tender mercy for those in need
Whether it is valued or not,
But like me
You bear the strain,
And the temptation
To fully fade away,
For unappreciated love
Is cumbersome,
And who is it
Who finds joy in playing the fool?
But when I see you
With others,
Or within our home all alone,
My heart fills near to bursting;
So blessed have we been
In these glorious days,
To share this precious life
That we have known.
