The Leaving
She left with little warning
Together, then life was gone
Eyelids stilled all movement
No breathing. Death had won
Yet victory to her belonged
Without fear in her final hour
A brief encounter with a pain
But it had no power
I would ask that when I die
I could have a similar fate
Holding hands with one I loved
Never early but not late
She was there one minute
The next I started sorrow
No more to talk or walk with her
We shall not meet tomorrow
She died before her body
Became too burdensome to carry
Heaven knew that she was weary
And no longer made her tarry
I said goodbye. I kissed her
Stroked her forehead. Combed her hair
Her face serene, she had gone
She had nothing more to share
