Patience
Patience, virtue, is a flower
Gentle as a breeze that blows
Cooling the fever of the brow
When the waiting time it knows
The heat from a searing sun
Merely makes its colour bright
Cheering up a tedious day
With its ray of coloured light
Patience, necessity, is different
No gentle flower is she
Neither sloth, asleep all day
A tenacious wild cat – she must be
Sharp claws clinging to the tree
Of life, lest she should fall
Hissing at any who dare to pass
Ignoring those who call
Patience has no finite length
Overstretched – her colour pales
Mirages of hope, conjured to view
Disappear as progress fails
Yes, though no longer caring
She keeps going, despite all
She will never let another down
Nor in despair’s clutches fall
A chameleon, changes with the light
So, with events of life, must we
Patience waits for time to pass
In whichever mode she has to be
The tree that sways in the wind
Keeping roots secure and fast
Will better 'ride through the storm'
Till calm peace returns at last
