A poem from a new poetry book 'Glimpses' by Audrey Coatesworth - short vignettes of life.

Poem Artwork

What are my favourite foods?

That’s not easy – let me think

I can tell you straight away

I can’t eat meat that’s ‘pink’

I could live on broccoli and green beans

In fact, I nearly do

You can buy them out of season

And enjoy the whole year through

A thick, fresh lettuce sandwich

I could eat any day

I prefer it with whole meal bread

‘Hardly a feast’ – I knew you’d say

I like fruit and sometimes nuts

Vanilla ice cream is a must

My teeth are not now as strong

So, in common sense I have to trust

My ‘sweet tooth’? I was born with that

Though, I didn’t ask

To eat homemade cake is ‘inbuilt’

A ‘sort of’ duty and a task!

Alcohol makes me wheeze

I prefer to breath, so I don’t drink

It flavours a Christmas cake, or else

Poured down the kitchen sink

I like crumpets with butter

Marmalade is on my list

A meat casserole, creamy porridge

I’m sure there’s much I’ve missed

I only think of food when hungry

At other times, I’m not aware

I’d just had breakfast, before you asked

So, that’s all that I can share

I like fish and pasta, yes, of course

‘Chinese’ is a ‘sometimes’ treat

I know my choice sounds mundane

But, I eat to live, not live to eat

At the same time, I appreciate

We are not all built the same

I’ve always been quite slim, but then

I’ve never played the gourmet game

Reads like a very slim, trim diet to me. I've done likewise. Sure helps keep away the pills and hospital bills as we get older.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
