I am awakened by the raised voices
of Robins arguing like human spouses,
making the same points over and over
until one or the other is subdued or,
frustrated or wounded, takes flight.
Sometimes their anger so builds
they physically attack each other with
a fierce flurry of flapping feathers,
then disengage and stand apart
to curse each other some more,
their chests as puffed up as
people's egos. Amusingly,
the term cuckold originated from
the females of some types of cuckoo
who lay their eggs in other bird’s nests,
freeing themselves from brooding
and hatching. It seems they want
the fun without the accountability,
which makes me wonder if we are
like birds, or birds are like us.
Enjoyed your spring morning. -gene.
