We are the rock at the center
of the tight circle we scribe
around our lives, and we limit
who is allowed to enter.
But when a rock is tossed
into a stream or lake;
no matter how large the rock
and how big the splash,
the surrounding water
quickly rushes in to fill
the briefly created void.
"What was that?" says
the person hearing the splash.
But when he turns to look,
he sees nothing at all but the
smooth and glistening surface.
