Roots: A Poem Of Introspection

Roots is a poem of introspection, of dealing with loved ones as they all too quickly depart from your life. I lost my Mother two years ago and in her honor, I present to you this poem.

Poem Artwork

Before Roots, I would like to include a little ditty I wrote for my Mother's 90th birthday. An amazing woman, she died 34 days before her 99th birthday!

Mother's 90th

Today is your 90th
Hip! Hip! Hooray!
Let's roll out the red carpet
For this is YOUR day.

A wonderful mother
My best friend too
Of all the mother's on earth
I would have chosen you!

Lift your glasses to toast Helen
This eleventh day of July
A very special woman...
The apple of God's eye.

Roots: A Poem Of Introspection

Roots, more complex than that
Tangled part of an underground plant
A place to draw from, an
Essential part of growth

My beginnings that shaped and
Nurtered the future me
When my world feels shaky, as if
My roots are being torn away

And my loved ones begin to part
I have only to reflect on these
Golden memories that
We call yesterday

The smoothness of a baby's skin
A wrinkled smile that lights up the room
Words of wisdom suggested with love
   Happy holidays where love and
   Laughter and good food abound
   Hands joined together in prayer
Connecting with one another and God....

And then I know my roots are secure
For as a root draws water from the soil
I, too, can draw strength from that
Innermost part of my private self

Knowing that my roots are not gone,
But are tenderly and lovingly multiplying
Sending out new growth in the
Never ending scheme of life....

Which has perfect order.

I liked this as I see the seed of life being planted in perfect love...I see it growing and maturing in the shade of the parent tree until their roots intertwine with one another perfecting the bond for life...beautiful piece Joy...

Joy, your mother must have had a rich life living to 98. I know how it feels. I buried both parents and two brothers and think of them often about how it used to be. Good poem.

Joy, I am certain that Helen is smiling with delight, not only at your “ditty” but also at your inspired dissertation on the saga of germination of a seed to the full growth of the plant, generously nourished through the roots. It is significantly evident that you were well nourished throughout life by your precious mother’s selfless sharing. A priceless tribute, Joy. Just Jim

First of all, a lovely and upbeat tribute to your dear Mother. And your piece "Roots" holds such truth ... though our lives change in so many ways and we always have a true sense of self through values instilled and our roots ground us. Beautiful write, Joy! ~Hugs, Elizabeth

A kind of spiritual-coming-of-age poem in which at first you sense the loss of your roots in your mother, but then realize that those roots are safe within. A beautiful tribute to your mom. You arise, and call her a blessing! I enjoyed this one,Joy.

We are, basically, the sum of who and what we come from. I find your words very nearly echoing my thoughts as I hold the good in me as attributes of my parents and what I do not so much like, my problem and my fault. I find absolutely no fault in how and what my parents did for or to me.

Very fine reflection of your Mom and family too. How beautiful it is that she lived 99 years. My Father died in 1987 and I still miss him, as you miss your Mom. A fine writing, Joy.

Like your "little ditty" on your mother's 90th birthday very much. Perfect for the occasion.

"Roots" is another perfect story, in that we have to lose in order to gain. In other words, the old must die and the new must take charge. I don't particularly like the way the Big Guy upstairs set this thing called life and death up, but the only thing we can do is, as you have done here, accept it as what is a cycle not to be denied.
