The ignominious Anonymous

I chanced upon some splendid lines
That leapt to touch my soul.
As though to say,"This piece defines
And makes your being whole."
I held the work in such regard
I deemed the writer's fame.
But, when I sought to know the bard,
I found no author's claim.

That one should have such power in hand,
With insight, to invade
A reader's psyche, and demand
A search for more be made,
Informs the thoughtful to observe;
The name of one so blest
Is more than worthy to preserve
And stand out from the rest.

The work, enshrined, will captivate.
But, what a heedless shame,
Some scoundrel deigned to duplicate
Without the author's name.
This affront, to civility,
Decreed that from now on,
The poet's worldly lot : to be
Known only as .  .  . Anon.

Funny about that. I had a poem on my front page on my website for months, called "The Man In The Glass" (anonymous), and only recently found out it was written by Dale Wimbrow in 1934 and the right title is "The Guy In The Glass".

You've said much more than first meets the eye, and with precision. I had just read your "If I were King," and liked it so much I decided to shop around amongst some of your others. Well done.

Yup...hate it when that happens. Love the poem. Has a wonderful rhythm.

I think it's sad! Thank you for expressing it so well!

Yes, I've seen many writes that was just 'passed on' until the names have been left behind. I know that whoever wrote them would have been proud to have their names signed. Great write this one is too! ~SH~
