This is a new poem (August 2003) I wrote to a dear old friend about our shared love of women.
We carried too much over the years but shined anyway
It's been a little bit of a down thing, baby.
It's been a little bit of a radio thing, sugar.
I love poetry and sometimes like to skim the surface of things.
We carried too much over the years but shined anyway
I screamed out of it all until there was this delightful dream
It was always a dream, sugar.
Always a decision that we made.
Then you came along and a bridge was created
You danced across my silent better until I saw you standing over her
Over her and helping her.
Me,
I was gone, another place
far into the Southwest carrying too much but still shining.
I should have been you
She always screamed with salty tears---for you,
Wondering where she had been all those years.
How long has this been going on?
I melted into hell and struggled toward heaven when she called your name. What is this living you give to everyone you know?
There is nothing but you.
I know how when Columbus found another world the threesome, discovered us both.
We only want a kiss, my friend. Only a sophisticated lady. We are done and broken, always struggling into heavens breach.
How long has this been going on?
Fine romance, a winsome dream, a prayer for a completion?
Then there is a melt, succulent;
learning how Cristobal Colone felt when he found that other world.
Yet, in the middle of the kiss,
all we need is another one.
It's a dance, a sweet dance--- a break from all those times.
How long has this been going on?
Long enough for a dream to become a saxophone.
A dreamy, creamy saxophone.
It drifts and pleats until all at once we see how smoky, smelling perfume , says "I don't know what love is?"--- it all is.
We don't worry about tomorrow
its' all a shining thing. Because as men
we skip and realize all the women
everyone one
really want us to relax---- they are sophisticated
ladies.
And so we care
and let it upset and sublimate. Until at last
there is nothing that ever gets us but
someone as lovely as her.
