I posted this poem before, but feel the need to post it again. Thank you for understanding . . .
dawning of a new day
or close of the day before
we feel an excitement
matters not, matters not
we are but passerbys
here for an instant
gone for eternity
if we think upon thought
and allow it to die a slow death
we rob thought of substance
we walk the forest road
a sense of quiet takes hold
what used to make us sad
we pause on our journey
find a cypress tree
sit upon its gnarled roots
listen to nature's song
don't know how we got here
don't know how long we'll stay
we enjoy the moment
as we empty our minds
of what we once thought
pettiness pushed aside
we breathe in earth's perfume
listen to nature's voices
the beauty surrounds us
mists from a slow-moving bayou
the aroma of pine
where salamanders dig
do we beleve in God
at times like this . . . yes . . . yes, we do
A very striking poem that I will never forget. Particularly for its emphasis on the mind healing peace that the natural world provides. Interestingly, while we humans find it mostly so peaceful and calming except at times of violent weather or natural disaster, underneath all that peacefulness is a violent struggle for life at the molecular, biological level, creating that wonderful natural aroma. And all of the plants, almost violently trying to strangle one another, creating great beauty for the eye… Mostly in color and while in photosynthesis, myriad deep greens. Myriad insects in constant battle, rapidly reproducing to provide food for fish, birds, reptiles and mammals. And the fish, birds, reptiles and animals are mostly in hiding. Fearful of exposing themselves to predatory humans.
Thanks for this short hike into your pleasurable psyche; at 3am in the bloody morning it relaxes my soul enough to grab a couple of hours of sleep, maybe, thanks...-e-
