modern day poets
how do we fare
compared to
those who have gone on before
some modern day poets I have read
matches up just fine with the "giants"
some (gasp) are better
I know, I know . . . sacrilege
I write poems
that makes me a poet
don't care
what Mr. & Mrs. Snooty sez
I'm an amateur to be sure
still, I've had my moments
like have most of us
we shine from time to time
I prefer rhyme for the most part
then again
free style gives me, uh
freedom
I have read the "greats,"
Shelly, et al
some of it goes so far over my head
I'm ashamed to admit it to people
some ofit is mindless clap-trap
as are much of my own
so what do I gather from that
not that difficult to understand
I gather it is a lot like
watermelon
some like theirs with salt
some sprinkle sugar on
You write very readable poems, Jerry! You don't go off the page with a poem that I need a dictionary next to me to read. I appreciate all types of poetry otherwise. I love it all! I love yours!
Much of this poem is so true. I cannot B.S. my way through some of the poetic masterpieces. I can barely understand them. So much for my Doctorate of Education. I think that piece of paper just gave me the BALLS to write. Before that, I was just too insecure.
I agree with Marvin. If someone is crying about the current state Union then they need to do something about it! If they can't or don't want to help the homeless, the less fortunate and less educated, etc., then they are part of the problem! We had an old saying in the Air Force, "If you cannot lead, follow someone who can or just get out of the way!" In this case just go to another country. PERIOD!
I also feel poetry at this level is a rough artistic form of expressionism. Most of the poems I read on the den are simply everyday folks trying to express themselves in a creative way. Many times it's BETTER than the classics. It's current. It's now! It's today. So even if we don't agree with all of it. Who does? Who care? Please, keep on writing. Write away!
Technology is always moving forward to a new phase. Nothing is like you have ever seen before. Why do people think poetry has to be continuing conforming to something of old? Time to break through that barrier and let the new poets create something new to pass down in history. NOTHING should stay the same. We are not ancient people!
Your poem is so interesting, raising interesting comments much of which I agree to. We do not live in a time of greatness; therefore, it is difficult to be great in such a mediocre time. At best, we can say that we have done what we set out to do, and as you said, we have had such moments that are truly ours.

Perhaps "..Quiet Storm" will help rekindle old flames buried and long forgotten or express the love so deeply locked inside of your soul longing to be released.
