 faithfully jeopardizing
meaningless laughter when'er
the poet walks the high wire
of poetical wordplay
looking down at his chaotic lines
hoping those who actually read them
can absorb
each and every carefully thought out rhyme
and when he climbs back up on that high wire
trying to balance
free verse, breaking lines perfectly
as to make sense and show continuity
there's a hesitant shuddering gasp
as he measures the tempo with a slight of word dexterity
and other elevated climatic wishes
because secretly, and most secretly at that
the poet has written certain passages
for the one he loves
though never has he declared this love
the poet knows she is aware of his foolish desire
will she brazenly taut certain weak lines
as not being hip enough
and if she will be so crass to do so will
the poet
press forward and begin his dangerous and perilous
ascent into the stratosphere
of his art
his everlasting art aiming a shot across the bow
of her observable charms
will he, or will he not
find the words which are eternally hers to receive
or will the spreadeagle of buffoonery
be his comeuppance after all

What happened to Jerry? A beautiful poem as always.

Don't know why I wasn't alerted to this gem back in Dec, but I found it today after thinking, "What's happened to Jerry?" This is a poem of sincerity and longing, grounded in experience and disappointment at times. Beautifully penned, needing not any iota of punctuation, as the words flow with the naturally embedded pauses and surges of life never in need of stimuli. Thanks for sharing this, Jerry. Hope you post more.

You have the essence of thought running through this gem of a poem.

Oh those chaotic lines, trying to be perfect with continuity with word dexterity at times seem like my foolish desire. I don't want to crass or hip enough, not looking to send my work to the stratosphere, I don't want to write poetry that's charming......I just want to write poetry that everyone will like......

I thought this was such a fitting metaphor for the poet wordsmith, as it often words may flow, but not before much thought, and later, some polishing up the gem.
Every word evoked such images, they held me to the final "all" OF THIS write.

This is one of your best philosophical writes, Jerry, I am honored to read it! -e-

I don't know, but I like this, nonetheless. Chasing your muse like she was a woman.

But I would caution you about, "shooting across her bow." For you might nip her nips and that would be a shame. ;-)

From one poet to another, all I can say is... Damn, this is just a superb piece of work. Well done.

An interesting "take" on the poetic process. Fascinating to have a keyhole view into another poet's adventure in writing.
