Now that I am old, I like men my age.
I did not like men my age when I was young.
Young men are each others’ enemy.
Combative, competitive, feisty, horny.
I was all those things,
and so were my friends.
We drank and bloodied ourselves.
We raced, we crashed, we bellowed.
I like men my age, now that I am old.
We meet, strangers, and grin knowing looks
at each other. We are kith. We know.
We were there, once, and we know.
Now we talk unbidden, of life.
Spontaneously we utter what we have learned
to each other, and laugh.
No blood, no fights, no roaring.
Men my age, I like them now that I am old.
For example, I shared three wonderful years as treasurer of my little community. The president, Herbert O. Morrison, was much more than the man who cried, “ Oh, the humanity…” On that fateful day in 1937 when the Hindenburg crashed.
