 So I Would Have

I would have you happy,
   I would hear you laugh;
      And against your troubles, bravely declare:
         "This will not last!"

We are born to suffer,
   The philosophers say;
      There will be an eternal night
         To follow this too-short string of days.

Much is taken for the little we receive:
   Friends, love, children...
      The Path is narrow and short;
         At the end, countless reasons to grieve.

What of that?
   Flowers abound along our course!
      Joy and Beauty among them;
         And LOVE between what is bad
            And what is worse.

So, I will say again:
   In this brief moment on our winding, uphill path;
      I would have you happy,
         And I would have you laugh.

You express a lot of mixed feelings in this poem that seemed to come out happy in spite of sadness all around.

Sometimes all we do to make things happy and have them laugh is out of our hands when we have done our best.
