i was only ten minutes late
that saturday
when arriving home to the news
....but i thought i should have first a wash..
well..
i was working man sweaty
from dawn to dinnertyme
laughing wi’ the lads
free from work
and money heavy
in my pockets
and pints from frothy fonts
downing gulps
o’ rich darkness
irish brewed and thick
as velvet black
swilling carefree
angels pissing
upon my tongue
porter bitter
and sweet........
i was only ten minutes late
that saturday....
when arriving home.....
car not starting..
no taxis to be had
nor buses on tyme
shite..........
too late.....
nurse as angelic as they are
halting me with
the end...
sisters gurgling
lyke soft highland burns
tears flowing....
i was only ten miutes late
that saturday
but i was late...
she lay with a smile on her sweet
red faced cheek
i spoke to her...hoping she would hear
and speak to me
but ten minutes late was i...
and from the silence of her chiding
i would never ever again
know her voice..
nor
be ten minutes late....
Very hard pill to swallow. However I think you should
swallow it and be done with it, since you can't change
it. I hope you'll go easy on yourself, life happens
as it does, and most times we have no control over it.
The lesson is hard learned!
Graham, this is deeply painful to read. One can sense the grief and angst in your words as they read them to full depth.
If we could only turn back the hands of time...ten minutes doesn't sound like a long time, until it means eternity.
I grieve now with you. Excellently written. Lisa
