Poem Artwork

This poem is dedicated to my 14 year old son, Sam…I’ve been here too, differently, but I’ve been here…it does get better…PROMISE xx

(this is how I felt at 17!!)

Teenage Angst

(Maternal and Paternal love)

Lying awake, I often think

This lousy world really stinks

They’re inflicting anger and pain

And the trouble starts all over again

Parents, who needs them? Not I

When they make you break down and cry

They think they know it all

And arguments become a bouncing ball

Parents; constitution of right and wrong

But can’t accept when you no longer belong

Brush it of as a passing phase, or being teenage

Then, they leave you locked in a cage

The cage is built of anger and pain

A hatred that lingers is a crying shame

They think they really know you

Know what’s best for you

Then they send for external help

By which time you whimper and whelp

Before, you got on with one parent

But now your love is completely vacant

Completely vacant? Not quite true

Your heart does belong to a few

But those who conceived you, gave you all

Are as insignificant, as you feel small

They stab out without really understanding

Who you are and what you’re feeling

All the while you sit and want to die

Any way that’s out of this pretentious lie

Yes I can relate, this really tugs
at the heart strings. You feel really
hopeless to help or accept help.

Excellent observations, Andrea. Perfectly rendered into verse. The struggles of growing up--it's all so traumatic, really. God, how do we do it?

Yeah, it is a wounderous miracle that any of us lived past seventeen. Problem is, a lot of us try to remain teenagers long after we aren't. Now THAT'S trouble. Loved your angst.

Andrea! I have an 18 year old. The picture you posted here is 'neat' compared to her room. I often have put myself in her shoes, and remember what it was like. Very confusing years. Not a child, not an adult -- very difficult. Your poem captures it beautifully.

Yes!

Life's tapestry indeed - reincarnation, not for me!

Parenthood is another area of life for which most of us are not only unprepared and relatively ill-equipped but also the service of greatest responsibility that eludes!
