My Sister, My Brother

Blood may be thicker than water, but expectation can run thicker than blood.

My Sister, My Brother

We have different eyes, you and I
from each an artist’s brush
crosses a canvas cast from different molds
shaped in different hands
yet woven from a common loom
our landscapes lack comparison
Van Gogh to Michelangelo
Da Vinci to Degas

We have different lives, you and I
from each a flight of dreams
crossed galaxies to different stars
fueled by different winds
yet born of a common song
our lifescapes know comparison
each of us, you and I
unique and intertwined

We have different lies, you and I
for each a stroke of fate
shaped by assumption
yet born of a common truth
our mindscapes seek comparison
my sugar to your salt
vinegar to your wine

We need to be wise, you and I
from each a single bridge
crossing gaps of understanding
shaped in respect
our heartscapes know compassion
forged in perseverance
strengthened
from acceptance
