They watched,
Warily as cats
Defending disputed territory.
But watched devotedly, not with malice in the manner of cats.
A word, a movement,
By one attracted the other.
Their eyes would meet, a smile, a nod exchange, never
A word confirming what was felt.
So, time passed,
Not swiftly, not slowly, but as it does; passed, unbound
By affirmation.
And love that should have been was like
Moon shadows which subtly fall, are seen, felt, known
And, sadly, do not last.
Lovely, John.
