From Holding onto Stars...

There's a lot of things I could write about

There are a number of stories in my mind

But for now I'll just pick one out

And jot it down with words that rhyme



I once heard a wise man say

'Do what you love, you won't work a day'

But now that I kind of think of it

He was never happy with the job he picked



There were some other things he tried to tell me

Like that old saying about slow and steady

But I know that he never finished his race

He got off track and didn't even place



Or how about when he said

'Good things come to those who wait'

When I was caught trying to get ahead

And he turned to make the same mistake



Another time I found myself warned

About something to do with early birds

But to every meeting he wound up late

Now isn't that always just the way?



Or this certain one he always mentioned

Was 'be careful not to burn your bridges'

But every time a friend needed him

Cutting them off is what he did



Even another time he had proclaimed

'Curiosity will kill a cat'

But he also had forgotten to say

How many lives the cat could have



And he also said a different time

'Don't ever judge a book by its cover'

But he only took one look at mine

And then he moved on to another



So maybe there are sometimes

Where wise men need their own advice
