On the shore of night
While others sleep
I speak
To the wind
Unwinding me
With deliberate ply
Of strings
That tie up
My heart by day.
And so release
My melancholy songs
That the sleeping dare not hear
And I dare not sing to them
For my songs are sad
And known
Even when silent.
That I sing me
To the wind
Is enough -
These songs are not meant
For ears.
It satiates my growing pain
Merely to sing midst
The night winds's refrain.

On this same handwritten page was this
The keening
Of our yearning
And our fear
Are silent.

Great line.
