... got snakes on the brain for some reason! Cheese, anyone? Yes, Andy, I'm waiting...

ZOLA

Pretty sister of Gorgons,
her aspic tawny hair bears
phosphorescent, rippling sheen;
her moonlit gaze is melting.

She stands on the cusp of the year,
staring into liquid future
as darkling sun births
through heavy dawning waters.

Serpents softly ringlet her cloudless face,
lightning tongues tasting the scent
of what lies ahead –
or, flickering, cover the tracks
of times past.

360 degrees,
snakes observe her circle of time,
hear tunes of mysterious flutes
conjure a dance that sets Zola’s
white feathered hips rocking,
sending ripples through
her shimmering neck and limbs.

The beckoning ocean applauds her arrival,
draws back its fluid curtains to light her way
and hisses a kiss of welcome
through smiling lips.

Zola sails swanlike into the morning,
stone Gorgons of past left behind.

Oh, Kate! Such poetry. I hope you get to see this comment as I realize you wrote the poem a while back. Is there a way I can meet Zola? Lol! Seriously, you have offered a fine gift here. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you, Kate.

a sense of renewal and the conquest of beauty over the ill-favored impressions of life ... through fluid metaphor and maticulously carved imagery, one can feel the determination to move onward ... the snakes of Gorgon are ugly, but the swan is majestic and vibrant as it ventures into the coming dawn ...

All that ripples is not water.. Don't ask..

Zola. Remember Zola bud? The bare foot athlete.
Gorgon Zola. Sage seems to like her Zola.
Only Zola can do the Zola challenge. Pepsi or Kola Kate..
Zola the Kola Bear..

Courage triumphs in this poem, and so does the poet. As always content and form are spot on. I love your writing. May the new year bless you and with lots of frontiers to conquer, and lots of ink for your golden pen.

There comes a point in our life when it is time to remove the training wheels and ride out upon our appointed path with vigor, enthusiasm and curiosity. It is always easier to lag behind and stay where we know it is comfortable but life beckons; and those who have an adventurous spirit and wish to live every minute of life that has been granted us, must don our magic cape and pedal into the wind, experiencing all that is ours to know. We never seem to question our mortality, thinking we will go on as we are for a very long time, until something happens and like a frozen towel smacking across the face, we awaken, amazed by the reality that has always been ours...life does not go on forever. The time is now to do all the things we have always wanted to do and always known we needed to do. The time is now to secure our relationships with those we love. The time is now to LIVE. What an empowering offering this is, Kate. I think I could actually add this to the trilogy I had spoken to you about before as I can feel your determination solidifying in this wonderful write. Happy New Year to you, Kate; may 2006 far exceed any amount of wonderfulness you could have ever dreamed.
Take care,
Sherry

You've got my kundalini rising with this one, Kate! That sexual energy spot with a little bit of Medusa, a little chariot pulled by swans for Ms. Aphrodite, and a 10th Century Gaudalupan commentary on the Apocalypse depicting the Goddess and her son on opposite sides of the Tree of Life with the serpent of regeneration. Intertwines with the Life of Kate and the woman on the Victorian sofa that had fallen asleep and dreamed she had been transported to an ancient natural utopia. Still though, this raises my kundalini (serpent yoga) coiled at the base of the pelvis between the genitals and anus where the central energy channel is said to run from the base of the spine envisaged as a 1,000 petaled lotus, to unite body and spirit. generates heat in order to rouse the snake to the desired state of bliss. You really defined the kundalini for me personally in Zola through the female principle of shakti, raw female energy. I'm going to tune in, Kate!

Leaving the demons behind swimming into refreshing though unchartered waters, breaking new waves! A beautiful vision
with a bright future. Swim on Kate, you'll make it!
Sieze the New Year and own it! Splendid poem!

This has overtures of Sage's Ouroboros , serpents and snakes must be the symbol of the moment, even though it is the Chinese Year of the Dog !
I believe we do our subliminal thinking in arcane symbols, which in turn trigger a deluge of words and actions
This complex composition strikes me as coming from that origin Kate !
