Often selfish greed prevails

As the tortured planet warms
Beset by heat, recurrent storms
Rising seas, eroding shores
Fire that forests devours
Floods that everything submerge
Glaciers melt and deserts surge
"We need our comforts damn the cost
All is well and nothing's lost
Talk of it a passing fad"
Whom gods destroy they first make mad
Hope sense prevails for progeny's sake

Something that was known in the 1950s and became very obvious to me in 1971 when I visited the Athabasca glacier in Alberta. It had receded a half-mile from the hotel viewing it since 1900 when people could stay in the hotel, walk across the road and enjoy the glacier. Now it is more than a mile away and shrinking.
The idiots that blamed Al Gore's often badly phrased warning in 2001 continue with their heads in the sand reaping great profits like Nero while Rome burned.
We are very adaptable and can adapt, but most of the ecosystem is going into shock with extinctions approaching from all sides while those with power and resources refuse to grow up and face the problem directly.
