Ode to a Mockingbird

This little fella gave me so much pleasure each year I had to write about
him in some way. In Texas, the Mockingbird is not only the state bird,
but a treasure. A Mockingbird can mimic other birds. There was this one
little bird that visited a tree in my yard every year. He sat up there alone
and sang his heart out to me. Thus the poem to the Mockingbird

Ode to a Mockingbird
I love to hear the Mockingbird that sits up in my tree
I wonder why he sings so much, or if he sings to me.
He sits up on a branch so high, so he can fly away,
But I know that he likes it there, and that he wants to stay!

I love to hear the Mockingbird that sits up in my tree
If I could reach the limb he's on, I'd put him on my knee.
I'd tell him what a joy he is, to listen to each day
And that I'd like to understand, just what he has to say.

I love to hear the Mockingbird that sits up in my tree
I wish he had a friend sometime, so happy he would be.
I guess that I could be his friend, for he does comfort me,
On lonely nights and rainy days, because I cannot see.

Lyrical and true! I'm in Houston, and the mockingbirds are such personable creatures.

This is so good! And brings back memories of one that on summer nights would sing all night. There was a popular song that had a chorus line that went, "Listen to the mockingbird, listen to the mockingbird."
Write on!

Beautifully done, Rita. You are a fine poet. I miss those mockingbirds. They used to imitate my kitty's complaints.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
