Flowers for Hummingbirds
Streamlined and graceful
songbird cuts winter’s black ribbon,
slipping sweetness through the air —
— bravely joyous and solitaire
no throated response,
just — her.
Did anyone notice but me?
Such music! — this little brown bird
eighty-five branches away,
crisp in her beautiful brevity?
I saw the artful notes floating
high above the forest floor
over lovely chaos and crumble —
Her notes suturing up
man-made gashes of noise,
that nonsense now not heard.
Listening, I see her pureness
planting over freeways
flowers for hummingbirds.

But yesterday, I saw a southern wren in my crape myrtle! And was relieved to see such an energetic little bird so infrequently these days.
Your image of the hummingbird is more spectacular than any hummingbird in nature I have ever seen.
