A ray of morning light

Sneaks through drawn curtains

Birdsong filters in

Competing with morning traffic

Weary eyes resist opening

Blankets hug me close

Nothing to get up for

No plans or dreams

Just another day of hours,

minutes and seconds

Closer to the end than the beginning

Still…I will rise, I will smile,

I will appear human

I will miss you…

This is completely beautiful, every single line. Fitting choice of image, and your introduction line is profound. My favorite lines are the last three, especially “I will appear human” because emotional pain can have us feeling like a walking piece of destruction. “Nothing to get up for” . . . so powerful. ~~ djl

I read this poem more than once and always came away with a different "take" on it. Was the speaker an old man missing his deceseased wife? Or a younger man whose relationship, or marriage, has ended? But no matter which version of the story I was reading, they all shared one thing in common. The speaker was feeling sorrow for a loss of someone he loved dearly. I think it's something anyone whose ever been love can relate to.

Great poem, Fee! Yes, you are being blessed with a brand new day by God to do the stuff you want to do. I feel more and more like this lately after my COVID and Pneumonia, I feel life is more precious than we give them credit for. Our children are even more valuable.
