The Old Journal

watching as fingers of light

reach across the sky

burning holes in the early evening

the leaves on the trees outside

seemed to tremble with portent

unable to contain their excitement

at the change in the atmosphere

you could almost smell the burned ions

of spent electricity in the air

as thunder rumbled the shutters

of the old house

making windows shake

thoughts wandering aimlessly

her words like fragments of glass

scraping at his memories

will she return to fill the empty places

where darkness has a sad sound

and loneliness seemed perched

on phone lines like crows

her journal still on the beach chair

 where she left it

she glanced back only once

at her old journal

where ink from the words

smeared and ran across folded pages

dripping off the edges of the journal

into the sand then swirled out to the sea

like the mystery to this, Carole. Like the opening paragraphs of a novel, I want to know whether she has entered the world of the "old journal" and now exists on another plane, or rather she has left the "old" world behind... A total gift for Spielberg to run with! Love it, xx

Extremely beautifully written, Carole. So often memories -- no matter how old or under what conditions when originally created -- some memories are always with us and not only with us but, be it/they joyful or painful, the memories become magnified within the passing of years.

Exceptionally realised expression, Carole,
and richly charged emotion without going over the top.
This is very fine indeed.

I love this elegant and profound poem because the truth is it all hurts, it does, and you take us on that familiar journey.

Carole, what a beautiful story of memoirs and lost love. Every line traces an emotion with an electric quality subdued. Change and doubt ring out in the rich tones of a questioning heart. A powerful journal left in the void and the closing of an era of love lost. Beautiful my dear friend. Love and peace to you. Jon Michael

"and loneliness seemed perched / on phone lines like crow"

As good a definition of sadness as I believe I have ever read, Carole. The poem oozed so much sadness and loneliness I could almost taste it. I'm saving this 'un.
