Walking Through a Small Town

Sometimes we feel out of place. But we have to be strong.

I walked through a tiny town.
It was a place I had never been,
And I had been many places.
But it was just like,
All the little towns,
I had seen before.
Towns like these
Were not very welcoming.
Towns like these prefered I not walk through.
The people looked and stared,
As though I were strange.
I knew I was not wanted,
In this small town.
I knew people
Wanted me out.
I knew people
Wanted me hurt.
Yet I continued,
To walk without fear.
See, this was not the first time
I was met with this greeting.
These were not the people
With the power to break me.
Many before tried.
All had failed.
So I continued walking,
Walking without fear.
Then a man who seemed twice my size,
Blocked my path.
He looked down upon me.
I looked up at him.
Slowly, I removed my sunglasses.
I stared him in the eye,
With a look as cold as ice.
My face was emotionless,
My body was still.
Everyone in town
Had their eyes upon us.
They anticipated I would take
A strong crushing blow.
They watched and waited
For me to be beat.
The man before me though,
He saw more than just my eyes.
He saw deep into my soul.
He saw my past battles.
He saw my past pains.
He saw I was not
A man to be stopped.
He moved to the side.
He let me through.
I placed my sunglasses,
Back on my face.
I continued my journey,
Through this small town.
A place I had never been
But that was just like all the towns I had seen before.

Small town mentality well described, but you also convey the defiance of the lone outsider who walks where he isn't welcome...and who keeps walking in such places...one wonders why...and yes, there's a power in a glance such as yours.

A striking tale, G. Rynk. Powerful and lonely. Well done.
